WATERFORD Charles V. Gurka, 89, formerly of Canal St. died peacefully Monday, Mar. 20, 2017 at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center.
Born and educated in Waterford, Charlie was a lifelong resident. He had worked for many years as a bookkeeper for the Clement family in both Waterford and Troy. He was a veteran of the US Army having served in Korea. He was also a longtime member and past financial secretary at the F.B. Peck Hose Co. in Waterford as well as an avid “Fire Buff” belonging to the former local chapter Box 17. He was also a communicant of St. Michael’s Church in Cohoes.
Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Mary Rogowski Gurka and by his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Gurka. He is survived by his cousin, Wanda Mitchell of Watervliet as well as a large extended family.
Charlie will be especially missed by his beloved goddaughter, Joan Patrizio and her husband Matt.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 8:30 a.m. at the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St., Waterford and at 9 a.m. at St. Michael’s Church, Cohoes. Interment will follow with military honors in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Waterford.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the funeral home Thursday from 5-7 p.m.
