Obituary for William Powers Jr.

William  Powers Jr.
WATERFORD William E. Powers Jr. of Waterford passed away Tuesday May 22, 2018. Born in Troy he was a lifelong Waterford resident.

Bill was the son of the late William E. Powers Sr. and Mary Grady Powers. He grew up in Waterford. He was a 1950 graduate of LaSalle Institute in Troy where he played basketball and baseball. He attended Siena College. A veteran of the US Army he served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged as a Corporal in 1954.

He was the beloved husband of 62 years to Dorothy “Dot” Reilly Powers and the proud father of William E. Powers III, Cathy C. Vanina (Bob), Kristin M. Upson (Jim) and the late Susan M. Serfilippi (John). He’s Pop to six grandchildren, Lynn (Chris) Slater, Daniel (Tatum) Serfilippi, Adison C. and Jordan C. Vanina, Tyler and Ashley Upson and three great grandchildren, Lucas and Gavin Slater and Skylar Serfilippi. Bill was looking forward to the birth of his fourth great grandchild in October. He was dear brother to the late Mary Powers O’Connor and Charles J. Powers. Several nieces and nephews also survive as well as friends at Lake George and Florida where he enjoyed golf.

Bill was a loving and compassionate husband, father and grandfather who touched so many lives. His humor, smile and love of life will be forever missed.

Bill was employed by the American Tobacco Co. for 36 years and retired as District Sales Manager and Key Account Manager. Along with a full time job he was Village Clerk and Treasurer for the Village of Waterford for 32 years. He was instrumental in getting Waterford the designation as being the “Oldest Continually Incorporated Village” in the US. He loved sports and was an avid NY Giants and NY Yankees fan. He coached his son in Little League and started the Girls Basketball program at St. Mary’s School, coaching his daughter and leading the girls to winning the CYO Championship. Boys and girls would still come up to him calling him, “Coach”.

Funeral from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St. (Rte. 32), Waterford Saturday morning at 9 am and at 9:30 am at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Waterford. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Waterford.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4-8 pm.
